IWD 2017: UN Ambassador Unveils NGO for Women and Girls

For many of the participants at this event, it was an occasion when they came face-to-face with the reality of the current mass suffering in the country, especially among women and girls in impoverished communities. It was a time to be inspired for action.

Many were moved to tears when Betty Abah, executive director of the Centre for Children’s Health Education, Orientation and Protection (CEE-HOPE), an NGO, gave an impassioned presentation about the plight of children and girls in slums and underserved communities. She cited the example of Makoko, a slum in Lagos, where most school children pay daily school fees ranging between N30 to N50, stressing that many children are out of school because their parents cannot afford that amount. Do Your Painful Periods Mean Something More?

For a disease that affects 1 in 10 Nigerian women, too little is known about endometriosis in Nigeria. It causes crippling pain, affects marriages, jobs and practically a sufferer’s entire life, and yet we don’t talk about it, much less seek medical help.

Today, Saturday March 11^th 2017, men and women in Lagos turned out in their hundreds for #March4Endo, a walk to create awareness about this disease that has aptly been called the silent disease. Just yesterday, I was privileged to listen to the founder of the Endometriosis Support Group Nigeria, Dr. Abayomi Ajayi who is also the MD of Nordica Fertility Centre, speak on the disease. After his talk, I was determined to learn even more about this disease. After all, “1 in every 10” means I know a woman who is living with endometriosis!
