What Life Has Taught Me About Friendship

When you consider that you can survive for a while without a lover or spouse, but it’s practically impossible to survive without a friend, it becomes easier to see how friendship is a bigger deal than romance. It’s not pleasant to be without romantic love in your life, but how much worse is it to be without a friend in the world?

I agree with CS Lewis: “After all—though our novels now ignore it—friendship is the greatest of worldly goods. Certainly to me it is the chief happiness of life. If I had to give a piece of advice to a young man about a place to live, I think I should say, ‘sacrifice almost everything to live where you can be near your friends.’” Read more…

Who Are You Listening to in 2017?

One thing we really need to avoid in 2017 is people who tell us what we cannot have, cannot do, or cannot be.

I’ve never been able to understand why people, after hearing someone share their dream or desire, launch into an explanation of why it can never happen. What ever happened to just wishing them well if you don’t have anything encouraging to say? Read more…

What You Should Remember When Pressured to Just Marry

If you’re pressured to “just” marry someone, remember that a spouse isn’t someone to “cope with”; being stuck in a bad marriage is dreadful and even more so when you kind of knew you shouldn’t have done it; life is still challenging for two people who are a perfect fit, how much more facing these with someone who’s all wrong for you; sex-as-duty for the rest of your life is depressing… I could go on and on.

Yet, in the midst of so much to be grateful for, I experienced some bittersweet emotions as I read through accounts of unrequited love, betrayal, new love, and hopes for the future.

If, somehow, I could reach out to the woman I was then, these are the words I would say…Read more
